Daily Treatments

Each treatment takes only 10-15 minutes from start to finish. As with the CT simulation, the patient needs to have a full bladder. The therapists line up the patient using the tattoos acquired during the CT simulation. Next, the patient’s prostate/prostate bed will be localized using either XVI (X-ray volume imaging) or Calypso (GPS for the body). Once localized, the therapists move the linear accelerator into position to begin treatment. Before they begin, the radiation oncologist reviews necessary parameters. During the treatment , the patient doesn’t feel anything. It’s important to remain still and breathe normally. While receiving a treatment, you will be in the room alone. The therapists monitor you during treatment from outside the room via closed circuit television monitors and an intercom. If you need anything, just speak in a normal tone and the therapists will hear you.
